Online Roulette Basics

The game of roulette dates back to the 17th century and once it appeared in casinos it spread rapidly across the whole of Europe and it was not long before it was established as the most popular casino gambling game of all. For many of us our main experience of roulette is as played at an online casino, but although there are some differences the essentials of the game are the same.

At a real casino each roulette table could accommodate just eight players at a time. If you want to join a game which has eight players your only option is to wait until somebody leaves the game. The reason for this is that all roulette chips have the same value, and each player's chips are a different colour so with any more than eight colours things could get a little confusing.

At an online casino like you can play anytime you wish to, and in many games not all of the chips have the same value. Mostly you are playing on a one to one basis with the casino, but most offer the ability to play live roulette where many people can play the same game at the same time.

Another difference is the speed of play. You can play much faster online than you can at a real casino - where you have to wait for the croupier to pay out wining bets and rake in losing ones; the computer does it faster.

You should note that there are two versions of the game. The European version uses a wheel with 37 slots. All but one are coloured red and black alternately and there is one green slot. The green slot is zero, and the others are numbered 1 to 36 in a seemingly random pattern, but it is not really random. The numbers are arranged so that sections of the wheel have similar totals when you add the numbers in that region.

The American version is the same apart from it having two green slots, one numbered zero and the other double zero. When the ball lands in the green slots the casino wins; thus you have a greater chance of winning if you play the European version.
